The Analog Girl Explains Her Mystical, Spiritual Video For ‘Devotion’

The Analog Girl's Psychedelic, Mystical New Video for Devotion

By Keith Walsh
One of the qualities I admire the most about Singapore’s The Analog Girl is the way she elucidates the mysterious, both in her music and interviews. Her electronic beats and melodies flirt with psychedelia, both in the way they are mixed and the abstract lyrics. For her new video “Devotion,” from her recent album Awe, Mei Wong, put together two storylines that resonate deeply.

Synthbeat: There’s more to this than a straightforward love story?
The Analog Girl: The song ‘Devotion’ is about feeling an unbreakable connection with someone but at the same time the word ‘devotion’ is associated with spirituality and religion. So, for the video, I wanted to combine rituals (that would be the girl with the lit-up moon) with romance (that would be the couple). In a way, the girl with the moon is looking into the couple’s world, hearts and relationship, and they in turn are being protected by this (possibly) goddess-of-love figure.

Synthbeat: How does the story of this song fit in with your current perspective of feeling Awe as portrayed on your album?
The Analog Girl: As to how it fits with my current perspective, of feeling Awe – I guess it would be the wonder of falling in love, and how it could all happen just by being in the right place at the right time.
